Dr. Cemil Tugay has once again been elected as a member of the Political Committee of the WHO European Healthy Cities Network. Comprising a limited number of political leaders from across Europe, the committee plays a critical role in strengthening the healthy cities approach at the policy level and enhancing inter-city cooperation. Dr. Tugay’s re-election demonstrates that İzmir’s comprehensive policies in areas such as healthy cities, combating climate change, reducing social inequalities, and promoting sustainable urban development are internationally recognized. This development is also considered an important step in strengthening the institutional representation of the Healthy Cities National Network of Türkiye in Europe.
Strong representation at the European level
The Political Committee, established following a call by the WHO European Healthy Cities Network, is composed of mayors and elected political representatives from cities and national networks. The committee consists of a maximum of 16 political leaders from across Europe, ensuring geographical balance, gender equality, and fair representation between cities and national networks. In this respect, it stands out as one of the network’s highest-level decision-making and steering bodies.
Priorities of Phase VIII
During their two-year term, members of the Political Committee provide strategic direction for the implementation of Phase VIII priorities. The Phase VIII period aims to make cities healthier, more inclusive, and more sustainable by integrating health and well-being into all policies, building resilience against the climate crisis, reducing social inequalities, and strengthening participatory governance. In this process, Political Committee members will continue to contribute to the development of policies and practices that reinforce the role of local governments in transformation.
