Following İzmir Metropolitan Municipality’s selection for the international Youth Climate Action Fund program, global funding will be made available to support environmental projects developed by young people. Youth aged 15 to 24 will be eligible to receive grants of up to USD 5,000 for projects ranging from recycling and urban gardens to water conservation and measures to combat extreme heat.

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality’s Directorate of Youth Studies, operating under the Department of Women and Family Services, has joined a major international initiative aimed at supporting innovative solutions developed by young people in response to the climate crisis. Selected to participate in the Youth Climate Action Fund, an initiative led by Bloomberg Philanthropies that brings together 300 cities across six continents, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality will implement activities designed to strengthen young people’s direct involvement in local climate action. The program will be carried out in line with Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay’s vision of a sustainable and climate-resilient city that promotes youth participation in decision-making processes. Through this initiative, young people will be engaged not only as contributors of ideas but also as active stakeholders shaping the future of the city.

Micro-Grants for Youth-Led Projects
As part of the program, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality will receive USD 50,000 in grant funding. Through this support, young people aged 15 to 24 will be able to apply for micro-grants ranging from USD 1,000 to USD 5,000 for climate- and environment-focused projects.

Projects developed by young people in İzmir are expected to focus on areas such as sustainable transportation, recycling and waste management, urban gardens and urban agriculture, climate awareness initiatives, water conservation, adaptation to extreme heat, environmental education, and green infrastructure. The Youth Climate Action Fund aims to empower young people to take part in climate action as active partners, working alongside local governments to develop solutions. Within the framework of the program, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality will launch open calls for young people and organize co-design and idea-development workshops. Selected projects will then be implemented with the support of the municipality.
