Hosted by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and organized by İZFAŞ, the Marble İzmir – International Natural Stone and Technologies Fair has launched its Marble Talks series. The first speaker was Interior Architect Yeşim Kozanlı, also serving as a jury member of the 8th International Novel Natural Stone Design Competition. The event, held at the D-esign Arena stage, attracted significant interest not only from fair visitors but also from academics and students of architecture and design departments. In her talk titled “Trace of Time,” Kozanlı shared her professional experience and her perspective on natural stone. She noted that she has been working in the field of interior architecture for nearly 30 years, focusing primarily on hotel projects over the past 24 years.

“A material that gains value over time”
Highlighting her approach to natural stone, Kozanlı stated: “In my design practice, emotion plays a defining role. It is essential for a space to establish a connection with its users, and natural stone, with its texture and historical depth, is one of the most powerful tools to create this bond. Therefore, when designing a space, one should consider not only the present but also how it will evolve over the years. Natural stone is not a material that ages negatively; on the contrary, it gains value over time and its story deepens.”

Advice to young professionals
In her presentation, Kozanlı shared examples from the hotel projects she has realized to date, illustrating how natural stone contributes to spatial storytelling through visuals. Encouraging young professionals not to hesitate in using natural stone, she also noted that Türkiye’s rich natural stone resources offer significant potential for designers.
